BPAL Review: Sprinklecake (Forum Only blend, September 2011)

For Beth's daughter Lilith's 3rd birthday.

This is the scent of the cupcakes that her (kind, generous, and wonderful!) Aunt Sarah made for her birthday! Lilith's request was for sprinkle flavored cupcakes ("sprinklecakes!") with pink and purple glitter frosting, and that's what she got. That's what you're getting, too: this cupcake fragrance is the sweetest of the sweet, the sugariest of the sugary! Rainbow sprinkles baked into rich vanilla cake with thick, creamy frosting topped with glittery candy flakes.

Right when I open the bottle and sniff, it's fresh from the oven vanilla cupcakes with vanilla buttercream frosting! Even on drydown and wear it didn't morph too much on me except to get a little softer. I still smell delicious. In fact, this is so good I want to eat my arm! But instead of doing that I'll just run off and bake a batch of cupcakes to satiate that craving I have all the sudden!

BPAL Review: To Autumn (2008)

Mist and mellow fruitfulness: mist-swirled, moss-covered bark and dry red leaves, apple pulp and knotty galangal, with poppy juice and nutmeat.

In the bottle: Just what it says, there's a mellow fruityness with an underlying nutty tone.

On wet: Apples... like caramel apples, with walnut, maybe. Sweet, but not overly so.

Drydown: A little more earthiness has mixed in. Like being in the orchard, but there is a bonfire in the distance. This is an exquisite fall scent. Just beautiful. Glad I aged my bottle because it settled into this wonderful fall thing that reminds me of autumns back in Indiana growing up.

This is why I'm such a fan of BPAL. Beth comes up with these evocative blends that just take you there... and bring whatever it is to life immediately through scent. I don't know how she does it but I marvel every time. Amazing.

They're Real! Honest!

Benefit's They're Real! Mascara. Okay, I'm in love, you guys. This stuff is amazing.

BPAL Halloweenies are LIVE!

I think my head is going to explode from this update! Haha!

Okay. So. I made a six bottle order to start. I ordered:

A Nocturnal Reverie (Violet musk and oudh with black amber, ambergris, agarwood, black currant, dark musk, fig, and lavender incense.)

Araw Ng Mga Patay (A cheerful, raucous celebration of life and death: bouquets overflowing with gerbera daisies, waling waling, sampaguita, ylang ylang, hibiscus, night-blooming dama de noche, santan, and everlasting flower with piles upon piles of bibingka, ube halaya, rice muffins, champorado, purple yam cake, and turon, and plates of gooey kalabasa leche flan.) The foody scent lover in me is going nuts right now. I can't wait to get this one. A foody floral? Yes!

Nothing But Death (A dark purple river swelling with tears of rain, damp violets, and specks of bone thick with green scents that speak of mortality: black dried fruits, opopponax, moss, violet leaf and petal, tobacco absolute, saltwater accord, niaouli, and brushed sage.)

Halloween: Las Vegas (Forum Only Blend) (The aftermath of piratical nuptials: walls smeared with red and black frosting, copious amounts of spilled red wine, the leftover contents of three full bars, dry leaves and desert flowers crushed into carpet, tobacco smoke, and champaca incense in a cloud of body-heat amped Snake Oil and Dorian.) Oh yum, though! This one sounds like an adult version, a boozy, resiny version of Cake Smash!

From Pickman's Gallery:

Post Mortem Laureatus (White sandalwood and twining ivy.)

The Changeling (Blonde wood, linen swaddling, pumpkin rind, and bourbon vanilla.)

And there are more, my friends. I have a wish list, and will no doubt be picking these up before they go away:

Mictecachihuatl 2011 (Copal, precious woods, South American spices, agave nectar, cigar tobacco, and roses.) Roses are iffy, but I like the spices and resins here.

Pumpkin Princess (Before the Grand Dame was the Pumpkin Queen, she was a Pumpkin Princess! Bright, sweet pumpkin with vanilla fluff, guava, chocolate-dusted white amber, tiare, red currant, raw honey, and meringue.) Mmmm. She sounds lovely. I still have some Pumpkin Queen, too!

Silver Apple of the Moon (White apple with orris, agave nectar, moonflower, white sandalwood, and lotus root.) Well of course can't pass it up, Moon Child that I am.

Golden Apple of the Sun (Golden apple with amber, hibiscus, carnation, frankincense, golden spiced tea, ginger, and champaca flower.) Ah those warm notes look wonderful!

From Pickman's Gallery:

Incubus Leaving Two Sleeping Women (Vanilla-infused white honey, magnolia, skin musk, ylang ylang, and beeswax with patchouli, olibanum, kurundu, and a feral brown musk.) The honey, musk and patchouli call to me here.

Expressive Head (Teakwood, patchouli, green pepper, clove, white cognac, vetiver, and champaca absolute.)

Sentimental Initiation (Red and black musks with bamboo, myrrh, bitter clove, patchouli, vanilla orchid, and king mandarin.)

The Gorobble (A scent redolent of the crusty exterior of burnt marshmallows.) Oh my Goddess, I think I'm in love.

The Wiley Grasser (Pine needles, wildflowers, and cotton candy.)

*Note descriptions are the lab's

Oh and there are a couple of additions to the GC, check out Wanderlust and Ars Amatoria for newbies! :D Wait, is that my wallet? Over there in the corner crying? Why yes, yes it is!

O.P.I Skull and Glossbones

This is the first and only shade from O.P.I's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" collection I've tried so far. And I love it. It's a light and creamy concrete-like or putty-like gray with a hint of sage. It applied wonderfully, good consistency. Two coats was all it took to be nicely opaque. It's a shade you can wear any time. If you like nudes and neutrals you might like this because it's got a nice twist to that. Looks great even on my short nails.

BPAL Review: Glitter (2006)

Glitter revisited. The original was in the general catalog under Bewitching Brews and was discontinued in 2005 due to a component issue. Since I missed it the first time around, I ordered a bottle when Beth briefly brought it back. I had only tried it once before and it has stayed in my stash. I wasn't crazy about it the first time I put it on but this time it's different.

Scent description: All flash and glam: white wine, heliotrope, d'Anjou pear, and lotus.

In the bottle: Strongly sweet and candy-like.

On wet: Smells almost like bubble gum. Still sweet but toning down a bit.

Drydown: I smell the pear and underneath I get the white wine and the sparkle of the heliotrope. It is a nice fruity chilled glass of sparkling white wine now. It's bright, a good summer scent. I like. Fades after an hour or two though.

BPAL Review: Plague Doctor v. 13 (Prototype)

Bought from the BPAL Etsy shop. A prototype that was sold at the most recent trunk show.

In the bottle: Green. Very green with an underlying spice and maybe a twinge of leather.

On wet: Still very green, not so much leather now, but a spicy greenness prevails.

On drydown: It's turned into something sort of medicinal. But not in a bad way. It's like medicinal herbs. THEN it morphs a little. I'm getting the leather just a little again and it's mixed with the herbal green. Very strange, interesting scent!

I'm going to age this bottle a bit and revisit it.

BPAL TOP TEN:

I've been addicted since 2004. These are my top ten faves at this very minute. As with any obsession of mine, things can change at any given time.

1. Dracul (Black musk, tobacco, fir, balsam of peru, cumin, bitter clove, crushed mint, and orange blossom.}

2. Dana O'Shee (Milk, honey and sweet grains)

3. Dorian (Three pale musks and dark, sugared vanilla tea)

4. Snake Oil. It is best aged! (A blend of exotic Indonesian oils sugared with vanilla)
It is BPAL's most popular scent by far and is just so sexy. I love it. Alternately, I love Boomslang (LE from the Carnaval Diabolique - The Snake Pit) which is a rich, chocolatey Snake Oil.

5. O (Amber and honey with a touch of vanilla)

6. Hunger (Black narcissus, orange blossoms, and vanilla)

7. Mme. Moriarty: Misfortune Teller (LE) (Red musk, vanilla bean, pomegranate, patchouli leaf and wild plum)

8. Monster Bait: Underpants (LE) (Sugar-smeared saffron sandalwood over lickable vanilla cream with a splash of butter rum)

9. Velvet (Gentle sandalwood warmed by cocoa vanilla and a veil of deep myrrh)

10. Bliss (Pure milk chocolate)

As of this writing Mme. Moriarty and Boomslang are still available. All the others except Monster Bait: Underpants (LE no longer available), are General Catalog.

BPAL SHOPPING / WISH LIST

I focus so heavily on the LEs that I don't give the General Catalog nearly enough love. Here's my shopping list. I've had imps of a lot of these and fell in love need bottles eventually! Updated as I order - try - etc.

OMG I WANT YOU! )

That's it for now. I'm sure I'll add more later.

BPAL STASH

Not in any order, just as I pick them out of my stash here.

My favorite notes: tonka, vanilla, musk, tea, aquatic, patchouli, chocolate, pumpkin, honey, Egyptian amber, booze, incense, very light floral. I'm a big gourmand / foody scent lover.
